In 2013, right next to the reconstructed J. Basanavičius Square in Birštonas, a multi-functional residential and commercial building designed by Vilnius Architecture Studio was opened instead of the old abandoned building that stood here before. The project, just like many other similar projects in Lithuania, illustrates the urban development trends of city centers. The new building on Druskupis Street creates the so-called impression of urban density, which many urbanists consider to be the key solution for ensuring harmonious development of cities.
Its architecture, like that of another multi-functional building designed by the same group of architects in Palanga, remains indifferent and blends in with Tulpė and Eglė sanatoriums. An interesting detail is the half-open yard overlooking Druskupis Street. On one hand, it creates a sense of autonomous space and does not create a dissonance as in the case of Palanga complex; on the other hand, however, the allocation of space for parking raises doubts given the resort status of the city.
